University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) – Institute for Occupational and Maritime Medicine (ZfAM)

About the Partner

The Institute for Occupational and Maritime Medicine (ZfAM) is an institution of the Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BJV) of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. It is associated with UKE through its university professorship in occupational medicine.

ZfAM conducts research, education, consultancy, patient care, and continuing education through seven working groups.
The Department of Maritime Medicine at ZfAM is the only scientific civilian medical institution in Germany focusing on the working and living conditions in commercial shipping.

In the AI-healthy ship project, ZfAM emphasizes the integration of technologies for health promotion through artificial intelligence. As a training center for nautical officers, ZfAM is well-versed in translating findings from maritime studies into practical applications. The focus also lies on innovative AI-based health interventions to enhance crew well-being.

Role in the Project

  • ZfAM serves as the lead partner for AI-healthy ship.
  • As the applicant, it is responsible for the project's design and implementation.
  • It conducts health assessments of crew members on board and prepares cost-benefit analyses.
  • Additional tasks include creating culturally sensitive informational material, testing the health platform on board, and evaluating intervention outcomes.
